Episode: The Bloodiest Day

Opening

The Rock Presidency continues quietly.

Which means, of course, the news cycle continues loudly.

Two veteran senators — one Democrat, one Republican — have become increasingly frustrated with the situation.

Neither can generate the usual political reactions.

Without presidential responses:

  • outrage cycles stall
  • partisan attacks fizzle out
  • political theater loses momentum

Worst of all, they occasionally find themselves agreeing.

They both decide the same thing.

The rock has to be challenged.

The Confrontation

A televised policy discussion is arranged.

Representatives from both sides of a contentious national issue are present.

The President attends under PIT approval.

Everyone involved in the issue is in the room.

The rock sits on the table.

The senators begin pressing the President.

Republican Senator:

“Mr. President, surely you must have a position.”

Democratic Senator:

“The country deserves leadership.”

The President listens quietly.

Nugget sits patiently.

Silence.

Frustration

The discussion becomes heated.

Both senators talk over each other.

Finally the Democrat reaches forward and grabs the rock.

“This is ridiculous.”

The Republican immediately reaches for it.

“Let me show you ridiculous.”

For a brief moment both of them hold the rock.

They tug.

The rock slips.

The Incident

The rock arcs gently across the table.

Bonk.

It taps a junior aide on the head.

The aide freezes.

The room goes silent.

Secret Service stiffens.

The aide rubs his head.

“Ow.”

No blood.

Just surprise.

The rock rolls quietly across the floor.

The President Responds

Everyone waits.

The President stands slowly.

He walks across the room and picks up Nugget.

He examines it.

Then he looks at the two senators.

“The rock was sitting peacefully.”

Pause.

“You two started a fight over it.”

He places the rock back on the table.

Silence returns.

The Press Storm

By evening the footage is everywhere.

Headlines appear across the country.

DID SENATE JUST DECLARE WAR ON PRESIDENT ROCK?

LAWMAKERS CAUGHT MANHANDLING SYMBOL OF ROCK PRESIDENCY

Pundits debate the meaning of the event.

Some call it a constitutional crisis.

Others call it proof the Rock Doctrine has failed.

Reporters track down the aide who was hit.

He shrugs.

“It kinda hurt.”

Pause.

“But it didn’t break the skin.”

Then he adds thoughtfully:

“It’s bigger than it looks up close.”

The clip runs all day.

Later That Evening

The aide returns the rock to the Oval Office.

“I think this belongs to you.”

The President asks if he’s alright.

The aide nods.

“Yeah.”

He rubs his head.

“It’s heavier than it looks.”

The President considers the rock.

Then says quietly:

“Well… it has a whole nation resting on its shoulders.”

He sets Nugget back on the desk.

The rock resumes its duties.

The Senators Regroup

Meanwhile the two senators meet privately.

News footage plays on a television.

The rock slips from their hands again and again.

Republican Senator:

“We just lost a fight with a rock.”

Democratic Senator:

“Technically we lost a fight over a rock.”

They watch the headlines scroll.

Both realize the press storm is turning against them.

Republican Senator:

“If my base ever hears that I’m working with you, I’m done.”

Democratic Senator:

“Same here.”

Pause.

Republican Senator:

“But we have a bigger problem.”

Democratic Senator:

“The rock.”

Republican Senator:

“No.”

Pause.

“The silence.”

They both understand the same thing.

As long as the President refuses to react, the political system keeps turning against anyone who escalates.

The Democrat sighs.

“We need to make him react.”

The Republican nods.

“Exactly.”

They shake hands reluctantly.

“This never happened.”

“Agreed.”

They both turn to leave.

Then stop.

They are walking in the same direction.

Republican Senator:

“…you first.”

Democratic Senator:

“No, you first.”

Closing

Back in the Oval Office the President watches the news quietly.

The headline scrolls across the screen.

THE BLOODIEST DAY OF THE ROCK PRESIDENCY

The President glances at Nugget.

“Apparently we had a rough day.”

The rock remains silent.

Which several commentators later describe as a calculated refusal to escalate.
